Is insulating the floor worth it?

In addition to insulating spaces above cold areas — like vented crawl spaces and unheated garages — pay attention to spaces underneath the flooring. Your home will be more energy-efficient as a result. Ideally, slabs that are built directly on the ground should be insulated, as suggested by the Department of Energy.

How much will it cost?

There is a cost difference between doing it yourself and hiring professionals to do it.

Costs really depend on how much flooring needs to be insulated, though it is really worth doing. Spray foam insulation typically costs a few thousand dollards depending on the type of foam used and amount of area that needs to be insulated. For floor insulation closed cell spray foam is recommended.

How much heat is lost through the floor?

A home’s roof will lose about 25% of the heat produced by its boiler. In and around windows and doors, you will lose about 35% of heat through the walls, and about 10% will escape through the floor.

How much difference does floor insulation make?

Insulation beneath the floor makes an immediate difference

Underfloor insulation reduces heat loss by 79% and cold drafts by 30% throughout the entire house

What is floor insulation?

Underfloor insulation is installed between the floor joists, the horizontal members that support a subfloor. Generally, this type of insulation is found in the walls of a house.

Almost all homes that have hardwood floors add an underlayment to add an extra layer of insulation to the subfloor. To prevent surfaces from getting cold in winter, we recommend using spray foam insulation.

Is floor insulation necessary?

Floors are easily cooled and heated if they lack insulation. This also helps to reduce energy costs and maintain air quality.

The benefits of floor insulation

It can be beneficial to insulate the floor. The floors of a building can lose 10-20% of their heat if they are not adequately insulated. You can save a considerable amount on your monthly utility bills with floor insulation. You can add those savings to those you can make by insulating the rest of your house and considering how long you will live there.

Reduced heat loss/waste

When you properly insulate your house, you will keep more heat inside. Look around your home for drafts. Look into installing floor insulation to avoid them. In addition to this, it’s also worthwhile to insulate your attic, so that you can eliminate drafts from your ceiling, such as hot air leaking through attics to the outside. Combining cold air from floors with hot air escaping from an attic can cause heat to escape very quickly. It’s your bill that will pay for what you lose in the flooring heat loss.

Save money

Investing in the correct insulation of suspended wood floors will save you money (and this can alleviate or prevent fuel poverty, depending on your circumstances). You will reduce your energy usage (and therefore your bill) by keeping more heat inside your house with floor (and roof) insulation.

Low Maintenance

As soon as it is installed, floor insulation does not require maintenance and will last for years to come.

It future proofs your home

When older homes were first built, most were not fitted with floor insulation, so you can improve your EPC rating by investing in floor insulation.

Our Insulation Services

Draco's Spray Foam Attic Insulation

In comparison with other parts of your home or building, your attic is more exposed to the outside elements. Insulation is sometimes overlooked.

As a result of the summer heat, your home’s roof shingles will be baked, transferring the heat into your attic. That hot air can then travel throughout your home, causing an increase in internal temperature. When your house becomes hotter as a result, your air conditioning bill will rise. Attic insulation maintains your home’s temperature better and will reduce your energy bills over time.

Crawl Space Insulation Draco's Spray Foam

Crawl spaces, like attics and external walls, are closer to the outside elements than other parts of your home of the home. As a result, they are more likely to experience condensation and hot air. As air travels from outside to inside your crawl space it can cause temperature fluctuations if not properly insulated.

In addition to offering a full estimate, we can show you how to save money and avoid potential damage down the road by insulating your crawl space.

Draco's spray foam wall insulation

Keeping your home warm from the outside is made easier by wall insulation. Your monthly utilities will be lower, and your rooms will be quieter. The insulation on older walls tends to be less optimal and can be improved with installation of new insulation.

Draco's Spray Foam Metal Building

It is well known that metal buildings have specific insulation needs in addition to maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the day and night. Many people encounter condensation buildup inside their metal buildings, which can produce a rain-like effect.

It rains when the heat rises to the ceiling and encounters the cold roof. As condensation builds, it causes the roof to rain. Metal buildings can completely be insulated against condensation buildup. And help keep the building at a consistent temperature.

Draco's Spray Foam Garage Insulation

Insulating your garage with foam insulation has many benefits other than simply creating a conditioned space. Keeping your home sound and odor-free requires insulating the walls of your garage.

Draco's Spray Foam HVAC Insulation

HVAC Insulation

Duct insulation will further reduce the loss of heat (or cold, for A/C) through your ducts, improving the overall efficiency of your HVAC system.

Draco's Spray Foam Air Sealing

Your building or home will lose heat or cool if the air sealing is improper. It is imperative that your home is properly sealed in order to take advantage of its insulation. In addition to inspections and sealing of windows, doors, attics, and more, we provide complete air sealing services.

Draco's Spray Foam Commerical Insulation

Commercial buildings often require a large amount of energy to keep them at a consistent and desirable temperature. Commercial spray foam insulation will reduce your monthly energy bills and assist in keeping your building comfortable.

Is underfloor insulation a good idea?

You can keep your property cool by insulating your ground floor. You don’t usually need to insulate the floor of an upper floor if you’re on the second floor. It is a good idea to insulate any floors above unheated areas such as garages, as those spaces may be losing a great deal of heat.

Can spray foam insulation be used on floors?

Spray foam can be used on the underside of the subfloor if it is within your budget. It is typically recommended to use closed cell spray foam for floor insulation as it expands less and provides better R-Value or insulation value.

How long does spray foam insulation last?

Insulation made of spray foam, wrap tape, and house wrap insulation can last for more than 80 years, according to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors.

What is Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam is a mixture of chemicals that expands once sprayed that forms a solid foam substance. Its greatest advantage is its ability to insulate difficult-to-reach nooks and crannies in a home due to its massive expansion after being applied. In the case of soundproofing between studs, open cell foam can completely fill the space between them with a single application.

What is Closed Cell Spray Foam

As its name implies, closed-cell foam consists of cells that are completely sealed. Due to the pressed-together cells, air and moisture cannot enter the foam. Since closed cell foam is rigid and stable, it has a much greater degree of stability than open cell foam.

Where Does a Home Lose the Most Heat

You can keep your property cool by insulating your ground floor. You don’t usually need to insulate the floor of an upper floor if you’re on the second floor. It is a good idea to insulate any floors above unheated areas such as garages, as those spaces may be losing a great deal of heat.

1. Basement Walls and Floors

Walls in the basement lose 20% of the home’s heat. Your basement walls and cement slab are poorly insulated due to the foundation of your basement walls.

2. Cracks in Walls, Windows and Doors

About 38% of heat is lost from houses because of cracks in walls, windows, and doors (often invisible to the naked eye). A gap of 18 inches under a 36-inch wide door lets as much cold air into your home as a hole of 2.4 inches. Sealing your home completely to fill those cracks around your doors and windows, as well as weatherstripping the moving parts of your doors and windows, helps avoid this problem.

3. Poorly Insulated Windows

Due to the low insulation of glass, windows lose a lot of heat. You can prevent heat loss through your windows in several ways. A triple-glazed window or storm window can lower the amount of heat loss from windows by about ten to twenty percent. Rather than installing plastic sheets on the existing panes, you can insulate your windows using plastic sheets. Using a hair dryer, you can easily apply a plastic coating to keep your home warm during the winter. Installing storm windows, however, requires you to select Energy Star-rated energy-efficient options.

4. Framed Walls

Walls transfer heat when they are physically in contact with outside weather. As insulation within walls ages, different types can become less effective, and therefore need to be updated or replaced. It is not necessary to renovate your home in order to add insulation to your walls since existing walls can be repaired. The wall frames can be insulated with spray foam insulation. It is best to hire an expert to handle this task.

5. Ceilings/ Attic

Due to the fact that hot air rises, your ceiling and/or attic can lose a large percentage of your home’s air. Attics or ceilings with cracks or holes, as well as improperly positioned vents, may will lose heat.

6. Exterior Doors

Your home’s doors lose the least heat. We recommend replacing your door with a steel or fiberglass one if yours is causing major heat loss.

Even though everyone’s home loses heat, some lose it at a rapid and significant rate. Identifying, diagnosing, and taking action to prevent heat loss protects homeowners from high utility bills and prevents breakdowns.
